ICE has no place in our schools and our schools are safe.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Paramount Unified School Community,

The District is aware that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is present in the Paramount community. We know that this is causing fear and anxiety for some of our families, and we want to assure you of one thing above all else: ICE has no place in our schools and our schools are safe.

At Paramount Unified School District, the safety, well-being, and sense of belonging of every student is our highest priority. As we prepare to begin summer school on Monday, we want our families to know that all students are welcome and protected on our campuses.

In California, every child has the right to attend school—no matter their immigration status. State laws, including Assembly Bill 699, protect the rights of students and families. These laws make it clear:

  • ICE and other immigration enforcement agents are not allowed on school campuses without a valid court order.
  • We do not collect information about immigration status, legal residency, or social security numbers.
  • Student and family information is confidential and cannot be shared for immigration enforcement unless ordered by a court.

Paramount Unified has adopted strong policies, including Board Policy 0410 (Non-Discrimination in District Programs and Activities) and Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 5145.13 (Response to Immigration Enforcement), to protect the rights of our students. Our staff is trained to support students and families and to respond quickly and appropriately to any concerns.

We understand that immigration-related events can be stressful and unsettling. If your child is experiencing fear or anxiety, our school-based mental health professionals are here to help. Every student deserves to feel safe and supported while learning.

There are also trusted resources available to help families, including the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, the National Immigration Law Center, and the State of California’s Immigration and California Families website, which offers information tailored to our state’s laws and protections.

We remain committed to standing with our immigrant students and families. Paramount Unified will continue to be a place where all students are safe, welcomed, and supported—every day, including during summer school.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust.

Sincerely,
Joshua Lightle, Ed.D.
